California Competes with the Birthstone Italian Charms
The writer of the following article recalls a time when one could not purchase birthstone Italian Charms over the Internet. That writer never got one of the birthstone Italian charms, but she did get a piece of jewelry from Italy. She discovered that jewelry upon opening a package that her father had brought back from Italy. In 1968, the writer’s father was in Rome on a business trip. In February of 1974, the same gentleman went on another business trip. During that trip he traveled down to Texas, where he visited with the young woman who would one day be a writer. When a young woman gets inquiries from a steady date about her birthstone, Italian charms might well be on his mind. Similarly, when a father asks his wife about the birth month for a daughter, Disney birthstone Italian charms might be the reason for that inquiry.
In fact, the makers of birthstone Italian charms might have reason to worry about competition from the Disney charms. The cute characters on those charms offer almost as much appeal as the shiny birthstone Italian charms.
There may well be young girls who would enjoy a charm that depicted a lounging Eyeore as much as a charm with a birthstone. A woman of almost any age could be charmed by a dangling Eyeore or a lounging Piglet, both of which can be found among the Disney charms.
Perhaps a father would like to influence his daughter’s choice for a date. He might be able to do that by giving her Disney charms. Suppose, for example, that the father of a young girl would look favorably on a young man with an interest in astronomy. Such a father might want to give his daughter a Pluto charm.
Perhaps a father would like to see his daughter in the company of a man with a good sense of humor. In that case, he might try suggesting that his daughter needed to hear some words of cheer. He might want to buy her a Grumpy charm.
The above examples underscore some of the benefits that fathers can derive from giving their daughters one or more of the Disney charms. A father is not likely to derive such benefits from a purchase of one or more of the birthstone Italian charms. A young man who is after a girl’s affections, however, might secure certain benefits from presenting that young lady with a charm that contained her birthstone.
Of course, if that young lady were to break-up with the young man who had given her the charm with her birthstone, then a new suitor would have a definite advantage. That new suitor would need less courage in order to discover the month in which his date had been born. The new suitor would not need to approach that subject in any special way. He could just ask, “Is that your birthstone?”
That fact might give a young man reason for behaving more like a young woman’s father. That fact might encourage more young men to consider providing their dating partners with Disney charms. In fact, they might want to purchase a charm that could possibly confuse any future date.
So, if a young man sees that a relationship is going downhill, he might want to buy his fading love a Dopey or a Sleepy charm.
